In the year 1992 when Indian Army started recruiting women in the armed forces, a lot of dreams turned into reality. You must have heard everyone saying ‘Desh Ke Veer‘ as no one remembers that there are few women out there who might not be fighting in wars for us, but are equally important for the safety of our country as the men are. To be honest, half of the country still thinks that the women in armed forces have no special role to play, but let me tell you how wrong you are. Here are some of the brave women of Kargil who will change your outlook on the women in Indian Armed Forces.
1. Women who climbed Mt. Everest
Women in our Indian Army are braver than you can even picture. Two batches were sent to Everest expedition and climbed the 8848 meters in the year 2005 and 2012 respectively. The batches consisted of some brave women like Captain Shipra Mazumdar, Captain Ashwini Pawar, Cadet Tshering Ladol and Trainee Dechin Lhamo.
2. Women who climbed Siachen
We always hear how men stay on the peak of Siachen Glaciers to protect us and this is why in the year 2009, an all-women group was also sent to Siachen. Guess what? They not only easily succeeded in climbing it but also became the first ever women’s group to climb Siachen.
3. The Sword of Honour
After defeating 244 fellow male cadets, Vidya Ajith was selected as the Sword of Honour in the year 2010, which is the highest honour for cadets at the Officers Training Academy.
4. Women at Territorial Army
Women never join men in combats but this woman called Jawan Shanti Tigga was the first woman ever to join men in the Territorial Army. For her brave step and achievement, she was honoured as the first female Jawan of our country by the President. Soon, she was kidnapped by unknown people and was tortured and tied to the railway track. After being admitted to the military hospital, she committed suicide in May 2013. Reports say, she was traumatised during her abduction and the fear couldn’t leave her heart.
5. Punita Arora
Lieutant General of Indian Armed Forces and the first Vice-admiral of Indian Navy, Punita Arora became the first woman in Indian history to earn such big honours.
6. Mitali Madhumita
Bravery is not something that only men possess and this woman proved it after she won the Sena Medal for gallantry and became the first woman to do so.
