How to Maintain Optimal Fuel Efficiency & Get the Best Mileage from Your Car

We all know that ‘kitna deti hai’ is one of the most commonly asked questions about cars in India. Fuel efficiency is important, particularly when petrol prices in the country are nudging Rs. 90 a litre. It is important not just to buy a fuel efficient car; it is also important to drive in a way that helps you get the best mileage. Here are some tips to help you do this:

Don’t drive aggressively

Sudden starts – you know that first-out when the light turns green kind of driving, sudden braking, revving - are not good for the car or for fuel-efficiency. Also, resist the urge to pep the car for fast overtaking.

Maintain a steady speed

Every vehicle has an optimal speed – not too slow and not to fast. Maintain that speed to the extent possible. Keep an eye on the RPM as well and shift gears at the right RPM rather than pressing down on the accelerator.

Anticipate

Idiots abound on our roads. Erratic drivers, animals crossing, cycles, two wheelers, pedestrians are all vying for space. Pay attention while driving and anticipate that the idiot on your left will want to turn right or that unsteady triple-sawari or moron on the phone will act without warning. Anticipating the idiots means smoother driving and greater fuel efficiency.

Tune engine, check tyre pressure

Keep your car in good running condition with regular servicing, engine tuning, tyre balancing, and maintaining the right tyre pressure. This has the added benefit of your vehicle being less likely to have a breakdown.

Don’t idle the car for long periods

Stop the car engine at traffic signals or when waiting in the car for someone to join you or finish their shopping etc. Idling reduces fuel efficiency and adds to pollution as well.

Lighten the load

Don’t keep bags, sports kits or other stuff in the car if not required. The lighter a vehicle is; the better is the fuel efficiency.

Check fuel quality

Vehicle manufacturers generally recommend the kind of fuel to use – follow the recommendation. Also beware of fuel pumps that sell adulterated fuel or have inaccurate pumps/ metres.

Check battery

Avoid using the car battery when the car is not on. Be sure to limit the use of the car AC. If the AC is not necessary, don’t use it because it is a big contributor to lowering a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Keeping these few tips in mind will not only help your car improve mileage, it will also make you a better driver and ensure that you're safer on the roads.
