You know now people on social media keep cribbing about how bad the year 2020 is turning out to be? Well, now it seems they have incontrovertible proof that this is really an unusually bad year --- M S Dhoni, known to be among the most astute of cricketing minds, got a DRS appeal wrong. So, that is how bad 2020 is!
Empty stands, players keeping their distance, no first slip – these are surreal times.
It was in the 14th over of the Mumbai Indians innings (CSK led by Dhoni won the toss and put the Rohit Sharma led MI in to bad) when Saurabh Tiwary seemed to be out LBW. The on-field umpire refused the appeal and Dhoni along with bowler Piyush Chawla decided to use the Decision Review System. Turns out the batsman was not out.
Over the years, Dhoni has developed a knack for making the right call; he is usually proved right when he opts for the DRS. So much so that DRS has come to mean the Dhoni Review System for his fans.
Everything seems to have gone wrong this year.
This is just one more thing that seems to be the wrong way up.
Dhoni can get it wrong!
So what if he made a wrong call with the DRS – there could have been worse things happening.
Some thought that it was the fault of the bowler Chawla who asked for the DRS. However, other tweeple thought that it is ultimately the captain's fault and his responsibility.
However, Dhoni fans were just happy that they got to see him on the field after so long.
It’s a weird IPL. Not only is the Indian tournament being held abroad, it’s all fake. There are no crowds, but there is canned applause and virtual cheerleaders.
The match gave Dhoni several milestones – he became the first to take 100 IPL catches and also became the first IPL captain to register 100 wins for his team CSK.
Chennai Super Kings won the first match of IPL 2020. Batting first, Mumbai Indians made 162 runs while losing 9 wickets. CSK romped home with four balls and five wickets to spare; finishing off with 166/5 in 19.2 overs. So what if Dhoni was wrong about the DRS --- CSK still won the match.
