So far at the Indian Premier League 2020, we have had some expected occurrences – such as a CSK v MI opening game. Then there have been some exciting games --- such as the very second match going into a tie and then a super-over tiebreaker. And then there have been some major disappointments --- no watching the match live at the stadium, no cheerleaders even!
Something like this.
The stands are empty, thanks to the COVID pandemic. However, audiences at home deserve to have the authentic feel of a live match; ergo, fake audience noises.
All spectator sports are being played without spectators these days.
Empty stands and all the noise --- just seems weird.
It has to be weird for the players as well --- playing in front of vast empty stands.
While some tweeple feel that the fake noise adds to the enjoyment of the game, others are a lot less happy about it.
And they wonder if the broadcasters think that audiences are stupid.
Some thought that it was a bit too much.
Others express the view that the noise is quite realistic and lends authenticity to the game.
The tweeple have their opinions and theories about the fake noise
This year we have ‘LED cheerleaders’ --- they are up on a screen, not down on the ground.
One way or another, viewers were watching the cheerleaders on a screen.
…Also working from home.
Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab had their scores tied at 157/8 at the end of the 20 overs.
It went down to the Super Over with a target of just three runs to win.
In the end, it came down to which team held on better to their nerves.
With just three runs to get, DC won with four balls left.
It was all about the cricket! And so the fake noise and the LED cheerleaders pale into insignificance when it the actual cricket starts. As long as audiences get to enjoy real exciting cricket they won’t mind if the other, inconsequential aspects of IPL 2020 are inauthentic or fake.
