The crowd at the home ground of the Kings XI Punjab at Bindra Stadium in Mohali, came to cheer their team and enjoy the cricket. They witnessed an exciting match and enjoyed the bonus of an unexpected result when the home team Punjab took on favourites-to-win Kolkata Knight Riders. We take a look at the highlights of match no. 49 of the Indian Premier League 2017.
The visiting team's captain Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to field first. The home team managed to set a 168 run total for the visitors to achieve. Chris Woakes and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets each.
KXIP batsmen Manan Vohra (25 off 16), Wriddhiman Saha (38 off 33), Glenn Maxwell (44 off 25) and in the end Rahul Tewatia (15 off 8) were the major contributors to a total that was defended successfully in the end.
Playing his first match of the season at this late stage, Rahul Tewatia was the surprise package of the match. Not only did he add a valuable 15 runs to the total while remaining not out, he also bowled a very tidy spell of leg-spin to starve the Kolkata team of runs. He finished off with figures of 2 wickets from his 4 overs, giving away just 18 runs (economy of 4.5 an over).
The visitors failed to achieve the set target and ultimately the home team won by 14 runs. Chris Lynn's 84 off 52 was in vain after all. It was an unexpected result; considering that KKR are near the top of the points table and most likely to qualify; the fortunes of KXIP is still iffy even after this win.
The perfect Catch of the Match award went to Axar Patel for his catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa. The Maximum Sixes award went to KXIP skipper Glenn Maxwell.
The Stylish Player of the Day was Chris Lynn for his 84 run innings. He was the highest scorer of the match.
The Man of the Match award went to Mohit Sharma for remaining cool when it mattered most; for his figures of 2 wickets off 3 overs having conceded 24 runs.
