IPL 2017 Day 9 Highlights and Other Headlines

Kings XI Punjab clashed with the Kolkata Knight Riders on the ninth day of IPL 2017. This was match no. 11 of this, the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League. Before this we also had yet another of the many opening ceremonies (we’ve lost count by now). We look at the highlights of the match and at other stories about the IPL that may interest you.

Monali Thakur kicked things off

She performed songs such as Sawaar Loon, tune mari entriyan and other popular tracks to get the crowd going.

Shraddha Kapoor made her entrance

She performed to some remixed versions of her popular numbers from Ashiqui 2, Ek Villain and others; much like all the other acts in the preceding opening ceremonies.

Match 11 featured KKR vs KXIP

It was the Kolkata team taking on Kings XI Punjab at their home ground at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. KKR won the toss and elected to field first. KXIP started well and openers Hashim Amla and Manan Vohra made 25 and 28 respectively at a good clip. Glenn Maxwell, David Miller and Wriddhiman Saha also made similar contributions to set up a total of 170 for the loss of nine wickets. Umesh Yadav was KKR’s most successful bowler with 4 wickets.

KKR won fairly easily

The hosts had a brisk start with Sunil Narine and Gautam Gambhir as openers. Narine made a quick fire 37 off just 18 balls an innings that included 4 boundaries and 3 shots over the ropes, while Gambhir remained not out at 72 (this innings made him the highest run getter so far and won him the Orange Cap). Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey also contributed with 26 and 25 respectively. KKR overhauled KXIP's total with 21 balls to spare and having lost just two wickets.

Sunil Narine was Man of the Match

For his all round performance with the ball and the bat, the West Indian was declared man of the match. He also won the Maximum Sixes Award. He claimed the important wicket of Marcus Stoinis and also gave this team the perfect beginning with his blisteringly quick 37 at the start of the innings.

IPL is more popular this year than it was last year

If you're found in front of your TV set watching the IPL game of the day at 8 PM each day, you are not alone. Reports say that the viewership of IPL 2017 is almost 40% better then IPL 2016. The first three matches had a 15% higher viewership this year when compared to last year.

Kohli declared fit, to focus on chasing

Virat Kohli missed the first few matches of the IPL because of the shoulder injury he sustained, he is now declared fit to play. In an interview he said that his team would focus on chasing well and on winning the away matches as well.
