Yesterday, we saw the second opening ceremony of the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League. As promised, the IPL2017 features as many opening ceremonies as there are teams and home stadiums in the competition. So yesterday, we saw the second opening ceremony as well as the second match of the competition at Pune, at the Maharashtra Cricket Association's International Stadium.
The popular playback singer began with a Marathi number to add some local flavor to the occasion. She then went on to sing her most popular numbers such as Balam Pichkari and Latt Lag Gayi and her most recent hit, Baby ko Base Pasand hai.
He made his entry with a lot of fanfare and proceeded to regale audiences with some enthusiastic dance moves set to popular Marathi tracks.
Deshmukh was the star attraction, along with the troupe of enthusiastic dancers, and the group of festive looking drummers.
With a game that was to feature two teams from Maharashtra, there was plenty of local colour to be seen at the stadium. “When attending the Maharashtra derby, dress like one!” said the Mumbai Indians tweet accompanying this picture.
The captains of the two teams – Rohit Sharma of Mumbai Indians and Steve Smith of Pune SuperGiants pledged to play hard and play fair; upholding the Spirit of Cricket.
Steve Smith opted to field after winning the toss. Mumbai Indians put up a target of 184 runs, having lost 8 wickets in their assigned 20 overs.
This is the first time in 144 IPL matches that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is playing without also captaining the side. Though Smith is the captain, it is expected that the team will look to the former skipper for much of the guidance and advice required.
While Mumbai Indians started well, Tahir struck some important blows by removing both openers and then going on to take a third wicket.
Ajinkya Rahane (60) and Steve Smith (84) were top scorers for the team and managed to overtake the target of 184 with one ball to spare while losing just three wickets.
