It was a high scoring thriller of a match last night at the Indian Premier League 2017. Kings XI Punjab took on the chart leaders, Mumbai Indians on their home turf at the Wankhede Stadium; what ensued was a high scoring match, an unexpected result and a terrific team performance from the visitors. Here are some of the highlights of Match 50 on day 37 of IPL 10 and the points table so far.
Winning the toss, the home team decided to put the visitors in to bat first. It was a terrific batting performance from each of the KXIP batsmen that came to the crease. The hosts were set a formidable target of 231 to win.
Wriddhiman Saha stayed not out till the end and top scored for his team (93 off 55 balls; 11 boundaries and 3 heaves over the fence).
Martin Guptill (36 off 18), Glenn Maxwell (47 off 21), Shaun Marsh (25 off 16) and Axar Patel (19 off 13) all contributed. The visitors put up their mammoth total, losing only 3 wickets.
The hosts got off to a great start with an opening partnership of 99 runs (Lendl Simmons made 59 off 32 and Parthiv Patel made 38 off 23). Skipper Rohit Sharma departed early but Keiron Pollard (50 off 24) Hardik Pandya (30 off 13) and Karn Sharma (19 off 6) fought valiantly to come within sniffing distance of victory.
Bowling the all important last over where 16 were required from six balls, Mohit Shama kept his cool to prevent the Mumbai team from achieving the set target. KXIP ultimately won by 7 runs.
Martin Guptill won the award for the perfect Catch of the Match. Keiron Pollard got the Maximum Sixes award for 5 heaves over the fence. The Stylish Player of the Match was Lendl Simmons, while the Player of the Match was Wriddhiman Saha.
Though this huge win does not mean that Punjab have moved up on the table, it still keeps them in the reckoning.Interesting times ahead.
