It was a faceoff between the keenest ever cricket rivalry on Sunday, 2 July 2017…only it was the Indian Women who ran up against their Pakistani counterparts as part of the currently ongoing Women’s World Cup. Continuing their hitherto winning streak in the competition, the Indian women’s cricket team completely outplayed the Pakistani team; it seemed to be sweet revenge for the humiliating defeat the Indian men were meted out at the hands of the Pakistani cricket team.
In their first match against England, the women in blue won by 35 runs. It was a convincing win and a great start to the tournament.
The West Indian women managed 183 for 8 in their 50 overs. The Indian team overhauled that total in the 43rd over and lost only three wickets in the process.
Captain Mithali Raj won the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian innings suffered an early setback when Smriti Mandhana was dismissed early, losing her wicket with just 7 runs on the board.
Poonam Raut was the highest scorer for India 48 off 72. Deepti Sharma made 28 off 63 and Sushma Verma made a brisk 33 off 35 to take the Indian total of 169.
The Pakistani women had been very good in the field, appearing in control with the bowling and fielding. The 170 run total did not seem difficult for the sorted looking Pak women.
The wickets started to tumble from the word Go. Wickets fell regularly – at the score of 1, 8, 9, 14, 24 and 26. At one point Pakistan’s utterly dismal scoreboard read 26 for the loss of 6 wickets. The Indian women were well and truly in the driver's seat.
Giving away just 18 runs from her 10 overs, Bisht scalped 5 victims. As many as 4 Pak batters were out for duck and only two got into double figures. Ultimately Pak were all out for just 74 runs
Not only do the Indian women remain unbeaten in this tournament so far, they also managed to keep their record against the Pakistani women intact. This was their tenth win from ten international encounters.
Though Australia have the same number of points (also having won each of their three matches), India are the current leaders by virtue of a higher net run rate. The Indian women will now take on Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 5 July at Derby.
