Which Are the Best Business Schools in India?

There is a very wide range in terms of the quality of B schools in India. Where on the one hand we have celebrated colleges such as IIM Ahmedabad, on the other we have institutions offering MBA degrees that are dubious at best. There are 5,200 MBA colleges offering online and offline, full time and part-time degree, diploma and certificate courses in India. Here are some of the top-rated business colleges based on criteria such as faculty, facilities, quality of students, placement record, image/reputation, fee, location etc.

IIM Ahmedabad

The Indian Institute of Management usually tops the charts of the best Indian B schools. IIM (A) alumni include CEOs, authors, deans, civil servants and top academics. Various lists including the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) places this as India’s top B school. IIM (A) has EQUIS accreditation, unique, highly regarded admission and placement processes and is known for pass-outs commanding high salaries, etc.

XLRI Jamshedpur

This is India’s oldest management colleges; founded by Jesuits in 1949. Various publications have rated this as one of the best and in some years the best B school of India. The college offers PGDM, fellowship programs in management (FPM) as well as a range of short-term management development programs.

IIM Calcutta

This was actually the first of the IIMs established, back in 1961 and is often the contender for the top Indian B school. Offering a flagship MBA (or PGPM) course, this institute also offers doctoral and executive programs. IIM (C) partners with various B schools from aboard and also has student exchange programs as part of the curriculum. It is known to have an 100% placement record year on year.

FMS - Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University

Some publications have ranked this among one of the top ten Indian B schools. This North Campus college was founded in the 50s as part of the Delhi School of Economics. It has affiliations with international institutions and offers a range of fulltime executive, MDP and doctoral programs.

IIM Bangalore

This college is one of the most highly regarded in India and Asia. Started in 1973, it admits 1200 students a year across several programs. The college has an EQUIS accreditation and is a part of the Yale initiated network of top B schools. It’s location is close to one of India's corporate hubs in Bangalore and its stellar placement record are just some of the reasons it recommends itself.

NMIMS School of Management Mumbai

This is a private school, unlike most of the others on this list and was set up in Vile Parle in 1981. The college offers all the latest technological tools for students and has tie-ups with various international institutions. It offers MBA and PGDM courses. Students can opt for full-time, part-time, diploma, doctoral and other programs with specialisations in law, HR, real estate etc.

IIM Shillong

The Times ranking places this as the top Indian B school. This was set up only in 2008 and offers executive, postgraduate, doctoral, MDP programs and more. The institute has a great placement record, has international tie-ups. Accenture, Ola Cabs, PwC, Thomson Reuters, Titan, Berger, BirlaSoft, Capgemini, Cognizant, HSBC Bank and JP Morgan & Chase are some of the companies that have participated in campus placements here.

Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad

This is thought to be among the best private MBA colleges in India. it offers a wide variety of courses, world-class infrastructure and international accreditations. The college also features in international listings of top B schools.
