On the say so of my daughters, the year’s mega release Avenger’s Infinity War simply had to be watched on the first day of release. So one went, albeit reluctantly, with a full complement of Marvel-mad teens to watch said film and hopefully to understand what the hysteria was all about. I came away from the movie entertained, somewhat dazed and also – furiously angry!
So 22 superheroes (or more, I wasn’t really counting) meant that some would be sacrificed. But so many! Loki and Heimdall going right in the beginning – was this supposed to be a foretelling of things to come?
It was bad enough watching the fresh faced teenager dying on screen; it was even worse hearing my daughter sobbing “No! Please No!” with tears coursing down her cheeks right next to me!
I don’t know about you but I am persuaded to part with my cash and several hours of my time to go to a superhero so I can cheer and clap and feel good about the bad guys losing to the strong, selfless, brave heroes. Who on earth wants to go a superhero film where the good guys lose! So I have to ask: WTF what this??
Were they actually trying to make us angry?
So Thor, with his new fake eye and the new hammer had it in him to destroy Thanos the whole time. What took him so long to get there! What was he doing while all others were being pulverized! And I have to ask what Thanos did: why didn’t you go for the head?
In spite of poor Bruce Banner’s best efforts, Hulk was a no-show. So basically they were just yanking our chain with that visual the whole time!
Thanos got what he wanted. He won! So what is the use of a sequel? Will we have another mega villain? Will Thanos become good? What? What? What?
Sure some of us were sad and bereft and unhappy and floods of tears. Some of us were just furious – dry eyed and infuriated!
We cheered and clapped and laughed. Certainly the film was hugely entertaining. But that end! Really – WTF! People are going to need therapy now!
The much touted post credit scene (where the audience loiters desultorily for a good ten minutes after the movie is over in hopes of some hints and scraps that the filmmakers may deem fit to throw out) gave a lot of fans hope. We will likely see the missing supers return in the next movie. But I've not gotten over being angry yet!
If we do somehow come to terms with all those guys (the superheroes and humans) just turning into what appeared to be butterflies or dust or whatever, will we be sustained by the hope of their return? Should we hope?
