Firstly I have a quibble against the timing of the release of the film Ki & Ka – it should not have been slated for an April Fools’ Day release because this could trivialize the potential that the movie has for raising new, more evolved ideas about marriage and relationships. In fact the movie’s release should have coincided with today; the day after Women’s Day to present a new and engaging idea that perhaps it is OK for women to enjoy roles that men have taken for granted for ages; that it is OK to be taken care of for a change rather than be concerned with taking care of everyone else. Venting done, here are some of the reasons for looking forward to Ki & Ki

House Husbands Are A Real Possibility

This is not just about the suggestion of a woman’s liberation from the expectation of domestic drudgery that is deemed to be her lot in life as a woman. It is also about lifting the pressure from men – the pressure to have ambition, to excel in a chosen career and to be the ‘bread winner’ for the family.

Macho Men Can Be Domestic

It takes a man who is very secure in his masculinity to be able to do jobs perceived as ‘a woman’s job’. I admit that it gives me a frisson to see the guy take off her shoes in bed and then proceed to summarily rough up those who may threaten her!

Men And Women Can Choose How To Love

He can cook for her and touch the feet of the saasu ma. She can indicate that she is in the mood. She can tell him that she will be back late from work. It is OK to reject these preconceived notions of “Hindustani Shabhyata”.

It’s OK For A Boy to Want To Be Like Their Mum

Surely being nurturing, accepting and unconditionally loving are virtues everyone should want to emulate? Not just daughters but sons as well? Why shouldn’t boys try and be more like their stay-at-home moms?

After challenging the social positions enjoyed by men and women, lets remember that there are reasons to go and watch this for pure entertainment value as well:

It’s A Romance

The chemistry promises to be crackling! Both Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor are actors with some talent and we hope to see well etched, well acted roles and characters we can identify with.

It’s A Comedy

We are a people who take ourselves all too seriously; we need to laugh at ourselves more. Hopefully Ki & Ka will provide that opportunity. See you in theatres on 1st April 2016 peeps; meanwhile here’s the trailer:
