Actors That Impressed Us in 2018 – And Why

2018 has been great for films. We had some unconventional and non-formulaic but highly enjoyable movies this year; had a lot of great actors make their mark. Unconventional faces impressed us with their acting chops and some star kids pleasantly surprised us as well. Here is a list of actors that impressed in 2018; actors we hope to see more of in 2019 and in times to come:

Dulquer Salman

He is well known down South, but Hindi movie-goers saw him for the first time in Karwaan. He is understated, believable; real and extremely likeable… because of what we see on screen, not because he is Mammotty’s son! His will next be seen in the screen adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s The Zoya Factor with Sonam Kapoor in 2019.

Vicky Kaushal

Those who weren’t familiar with this highly versatile and intelligent actor were forced to take notice. He made a huge impact with his diverse roles in Raazi, Manmarziyaan and Sanju and proved that he can handle any type of role and do it absolute justice.

Rajkumar Rao

He has consistently impressed us with this great range of acting talent and his choice of interesting films. His films in 2018: Stree, Fanney Khan, Love Sonia, 5 Weddings - were no exception.

Taapsee Pannu

She has repeatedly proved herself; particularly with hard-hitting films such as Pink. However this year, Taapsee Pannu impressed us again with terrific performances in Mulk and Manmarziyaan both very different, but equally impressive roles.

Mithila Palkar

We saw her in Karwaan and liked her instantly. She has also made her presence felt in the TV series Girl in the City and Little Things on Netflix.

Avinash Tiwari

He played Majnu in the Imtiaz Ali interpretation of the eternal star crossed lovers, Laila Majnu. His is an unconventional face, as his Majnu informs Laila in the film. But he has the histrionic ability and a screen presence that impress.

Mrunal Thakur

She played the lead role in Tabrez Noorani and David Womark’s gritty, dark story of human trafficking, Love Sonia. Thakur was chosen after a yearlong search of over 2,500 girls and fully justified being cast in the lead role of the film. She held her own in a film that starred Freida Pinto, Demi Moore, Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadda, Anupam Kher, Adil Hussain among others.

Sara Ali Khan

Being the daughter of the ebullient Amrita Singh and the suave Saif Ali Khan, perhaps she was born to do it and Sara Ali Khan comes across as a natural in Kedarnath. She is authentic, likeable and has a great screen presence. We will see her again in her second film, Simmba before the year is out.
