It seems that the creative team in charge of the Cred advertising campaign is able to bring out the latent acting talents of the unlikeliest of people. Remember the Cred ad featuring Rahul Dravid as Indranagar Ka Gunda where we had the usually impeccably behaved former cricketer in an uncharacteristically belligerent avatar? Well now they’ve done it again, this time with the nation’s new heartthrob, Olympic gold medal winner Neeraj Chopra.
This is an objectively funny ad where Chopra displays some undeniable acting chops. He appears as various over-the-top characters and parodies the way that so many have tried to associate with Chopra’s newfound fame to further themselves.
A few of the tweeple thought that the ad was ‘cringe’ and just a marketing gimmick to go viral on social media. Err… going viral on social media is the very purpose of an ad campaign such as this?
Others thought that much of the audience would not understand the ad.
Some wanted to know how Chopra made this amazing switch to acting from athletics and why.
There were many offering unsolicited advice to Chopra about concentrating on his sport and not getting swayed by the blandishments of fame and money.
They loved the creative concept and of course Chopra’s ability to portray so many different whacky characters.
Virat Kohli is supposed to the celebrity endorsement superstar – Chopra’s excellent work in this ad may be a lesson!
After his gold medal win at the Olympics, Neeraj Chopra seems to be the falvour of the season and everyone wants a piece of him – which is precisely what the ad parodies.
It is true that product endorsements by sportspersons in India are largely dominated by cricket players. This helps promote other sports as well.
This is enough to make a lot of established actors insecure said some of the tweeple in response to Chopra’s undeniable acting talent.
As this Twitter user points out, this ad is airing on TV while the IPL is on – not only does this give it wide visibility, cricket devotees are reminded that there is sport beyond cricket.
In the end it is a funny, effective ad that effectively promotes the Cred product and underlines Neeraj Chopra’s star potential. People on social media are enjoying it enough to make it viral – sounds like a win-win all around.
