Remember Hema Malini as the original Dream Girl (kisi shaayar ki ghazal) Dream Girl? Yes, so this is not that. This Dream Girl is a 2019 film starring Ayushmaan Khurrana so we are already intrigued. And the trailer of this upcoming film is unconventional and funny and extremely promising. Twitter’s meme-makers loved the trailer, which is also trending at #1 on YouTube. Releasing on 13 September 2019, Balaji Motion Picture’s Dream Girl is definitely one to watch out for.
The dream ‘girl’ is not a girl at all; ‘she’ is a reasonably pretty boy – Lokesh – with a penchant for playing female characters and a talent for various accents. The movie stars Nushrat Bharucha as Dolly, Annu Kapoor as Lokesh's father, Manjot Singh, Vijay Raaz, Sumona Chakravarti and others. The trailer has many laugh out loud moments and seems to promise an enjoyable farce.
Look at his filmography: Vicky Donor, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Andhadhun, Badhai Ho, Article 15… all excellent films; all films with refreshingly new stories and intriguing content.
The lead actor as well as others of the cast are fine actors in their own right. However it is the story and the writing and portrayal of identifiable characters that seem promise a highly watchable film.
Indian theatre has a time-honoued tradition of men playing women. The movie touches on this and also on other ways that people pretend to be what they are not; especially in these days of fake social media profiles, stalkers who pretend to be one thing when they are another.
Meme makers were right on it – the trailer is content rich; offering plenty of inspiration.
Khurrana with his kohl-lined eyes and his anxious father running a modest store and telling his son to behave less like a woman --- this is a scene made for memes!
But so funny!
Obviously ‘Pooja’ is an important in this film, and in the lives of little boys who are not little girls.
When speaking about unpaid loans, the name of Vijay Mallya seems to pop up naturally.
The screenplay by Nirmaan D. Singh and Raaj Shaandilyaa and the latter's direction deliver some really funny scenes and dialogues.
This line from the protagonist Lokesh, where he is presumably applying for a woman's job also lends itself beautifully to memes.
He has done numerous promising roles. In this film he plays a policeman who is presumably also after the nonexistent Pooja who appears to be the object of everyone's affections.
The movie trailer inspired a lot of Tiktok references because of the many crossdressing ‘stars’ on the platform.
Khurrana seems to have excellent taste; to say nothing of intuition about choosing films with new and original content --- just highly watchable films. We cannot say the same for any other big Bollywood ‘stars’.
The Dream Girl trailer promises a film that is more than just a funny story. It also seems to have a social message in there somewhere --- a film that hopefully makes us think even as it makes us laugh.
