The guys over at Marvel Studios certainly know how to keep our interest snagged in an upcoming release. So we are gifted a new one-minute special look trailer of the upcoming Avengers Endgame, which isn’t all that ‘new’ truth be told. And we are also gifted a Marvel Anthem which is the result of a unique collaboration between Marvel and Indian music maestro A R Rahman.
It is a one minute release that tells us a few things: Tony Stark intones the dramatic line It’s not about how much we've lost. It’s about how much we have left (so still no hint about whether the done and dusted supers will come back).
Ironman proceeds to ask Captain America do you trust me? He replies I do and the two exchange a solemn handshake. Fans loved it.
All that brotherhood and bonhomie! It seemed as though the two would burst into song at any moment!
This commentator agrees; the image of Homer Simpson dressed up as a happy bride conveying the sarcasm quite pointedly.
Now this tweet arrives at a convoluted and farfetched possibility that Peter (Parker or is there another Peter?) is back and Tony is dead.
Who among the fans doubted this… now really! Also, new armour!
While most Marvel fans think of Thanos as the arch villain who must be brought down, there is a significant number out there that thinks of him as a hero; a savior that thinned the herd and made the world worth living in again.
Considering the fact that Avengers Infinity War was the highest grossing foreign film for 2018 and one of the top 20 films doing the best business in India, they had to do something special for the fans here. This is what Marvel imagines Indian fans want – a Marvel Anthem from A R Rahman.
A lot of people were not particularly impressed with the idea of Marvel throwing a proverbial bone at the Indian fans.
Its Rahman, arguably one of India’s best ever composers, doing a Marvel Anthem! What’s not to like! Except that this is far, far from his best work or even his better work.
A lot of fans felt that while the song is objectively good, it isn’t quite appropriate for the Marvel universe. Some fans felt that the colourful video was incongruous in the context of what will be a dark film.
Me, I am a huge fan of Rahman but thought that the song was quite underwhelming; a disappointment. One commentator thought that the anthem was a good April Fool’s joke; “now release the actual anthem”. Another said this: “If Thor had gone for the head we need not have listened to this stupid song”. And yet another said: “this may kill the remaining half of the universe”.
