Marvel or rather the MCU’s Avenger films have shown the way to super success - multi-superhero films where all the good guys work in concert against the baddies. It all makes for a lot of adrenalin-inducing fist-pump cinematic moments where the audience cheers and whistles in unison. Rohit Shetty cottoned on to this and came up with his supercop series: we had the Singham films (Ajay Devgn), Simmba (Ranveer Singh + Devgn) and now Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar + the other two).
The movie stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif and also has Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh reprising their earlier loose cannon cop supercop roles. The trailer is yet another revenge-drama-Islamist-terror story about Mumbai (with the token ‘good’ Muslim(s) as well of course). It falls to the intrepid cops to get together and save the day --- and the city.
The tweeple pointed out that at 4 minutes+, this is a really long trailer.
Considering that the trailer pretty much lays out the plot of the movie, this is one of those trailer-as-movie trailers.
Perhaps it isn't a completely original idea but one that has been modified to Indian requirements?
The trailer promises lots of fights, spills, and thrills --- accompanied by that charged background score.
What’s better than one supercop? Two supercops. What’s better than that?
So we are to have a triple dose of the swaggering, super-cool, smart-talking, strutting supers - frequently seen walking towards the camera in slow-mo.
It seems we are also to have some sophomoric double entendre humour in this film.
Many were reminded of the original loose-cannon cop: Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey.
Of course the stunts are going to be spectacular and OTT; likely to have little respect for the laws of physics and other such irrelevancies.
Most don’t mind that the movie takes liberties with laws of physics. It promises to be a fun, seeti-maar, paisa-vasool entertainer that the regular Joe can identify with.
This seems to be Rohit Shetty laughing at himself and all that OTT machismo very much on display in his supercop films.
The banter seems to suggest that hopefully, this is a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
It’s exam season in many parts of the country. So, this meme --- banta hai!
With the corona virus hogging headlines these days, we are likely to see many memes about the pandemic.
I suspect that filmmakers ensure that the most meme-worthy scenes and lines are included in the trailer.
The Sooryavanshi trailer is trending at No 1 on YouTube, and the many meme-worthy lines are helping create buzz on other social media platforms. In other words, all set for the movie to release on 24th March 2020!
