The Met Ball or the Met Gala is one of the biggest social events of New York City. This is an annual fundraiser and an invite to the Met Gala is the unequivocal sign of having arrived. The annual fashion exhibit has various themes each year – in 2017 it was Art of the In-between, in 2018 it was Heavenly bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. This year it was Camp – Notes on Fashion – here, 'camp' is not about going camping but about a style that is admittedly in bad taste and meant to be ironic.
The idea is to showcase extreme fashion; over the top, bizarre fashion that pushes the limits.
She arrived with several people holding the train of her long, voluminous pink outfit. She removed that to reveal another outfit beneath, then proceeded to strip down to the bare minimum. What an entrance!
Singer Janelle Monae turned up in a multilayered top hat and this costume. Just so you know, that eye, actually blinks! Props for being in tune with the theme and the latest in clothing technology!
Actor-singer Ezra Miller had a mask that revealed 7 eyes…. So disturbing!
He arrived carrying a head – of himself! Also exceedingly freaky.
Performer Billy Porter pulled out all the stops; being carried in, in grand fashion as the Sun God and then climbing down to earth to display his ‘wings’.
The songstress arrived as a chandelier (and yes those bulbs actually lit up). But that wasn’t the only arrow in her quiver.
Evidently being a chandelier isn’t campy enough, so we then had this!
Priyanka Chopra arrived with husband Nick Jonas and cut quite a swathe; with a look remarkably like Johnny Depp from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Deepika Padukone was a lot more toned down in her pink creation.
She is known for her flamboyant clothing as much as for her spats with Nikki Minaj. Her outfit, which needed several people to help her move, was just an extension of her rather florid personality.
Actor-presenter Michael Urie came as half man, half woman. Gender fluidity is clearly a big part of fashion now.
They are famous for being famous mostly. He is known for his frequently unhinged utterances, she for her quite incredible waist-to-hip ratio.
Her flouncy yellow outfit also had practical yellow trainers below! There were other amazing outfits, but these are some that really caught the eye!
