Unless you’ve been completely off social media in the past few days, you’ve come across the gushing speculation about the love life and the rumoured impending nuptials of Priyanka Chopra and her significant other Nick Jonas. The gossip mills went into overdrive when the two attended a wedding together and then completely lost it when the engagement between India’s biggest female star and the American musician was announced on her 36th birthday earlier this month. Once it seemed clear that a marriage was in the offing, the trite questions about the woman continuing to work after marriage cropped up.
The British tabloid tweeted a link to this writeup, asking Will Priyanka Chopra Continue Acting After Her Marriage to Nick Jonas? The article spoke about the announcement of the engagement between 36 year old Chopra and 25 year old Jonas; about how Jonas popped the question after buying a Tiffany ring in London.
The Daily Mail article cited the news that PC has walked out of a production where she was to star in a film with Salman Khan - titled Bharat, as a reason for posing such a question. The fact that the couple was also seen on an outing with the newly wedded royal couple of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (American actress who gave up working for her new royal duties) also forms a part of the speculation.
This tweet expresses the exasperation that many felt at the headline in question. Is this a question that people really feel the need to ask? Now? When we think of ourselves as progressive and equal?
Many on the micro-blogging sites expressed indignation about the question asked – the fact that it was asked at all alludes to the fact that women are expected to make all the sacrifices when they get married.
Why are people asking whether or not PC will continue to work after marriage? Why is the same question not being asked of Nick Jonas, asked many of the Tweeple? Particularly when we contrast the careers of the two: the fact that Jonas has at best, enjoyed modest fame and success when compared with PC who is a huge international star!
This one seems rather angry; simply losing patience with the inanity and presumption of such a question.
This article seems to indicate that it isn’t impending marriage so much as some attractive film offers that have resulted in PC walking out of the Bharat production. This Times report indicates that she has signed up for a film opposite Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy fame); a production entitled Cowboy Ninja Viking (a rather schizophrenic sounding project to my mind, but never mind me).
There are also reports that PC has signed up for a Hindi film called Sky is Pink with Farhan Akhtar. So clearly she has no plans to give up working at all; or even working in Bollywood. This is a smart, successful, savvy woman with both brains and talent; someone who knows her own mind and makes her own decisions. To speculate whether or not she will continue to work after marriage is just silly. For once I agree with the Tweeple – whether or not Jonas will continue to work after marriage is a far more relevant question.
