Somehow we expect celebrities to be more aware, smart and conscious of what they say, at least in public. These people are humans like everyone else, so we really shouldn’t hold them up to a higher standard. But we do. So, anything they say or do is held up under a microscope, examined, reexamined and found wanting. When celebs said these things, we thought they were really dumb to do so:
“If you’re not good looking, you are considered a good actor. You know what I mean”. I think we know what she means. Since Sonam is seen as a fashion and glamour icon, apparently, she seems to think that that is the reason she is not considered a serious actor.
“You’ve seen Inception? Understood it? Liked it? Then, you will like Dilwale.” I haven’t watched Inception because it’s supposed to be layered, complex and difficult to understand. Obviously, Varun Dhawan’s Dilwale is absolutely nothing like that – a little self-awareness is called for, I think.
“I have raw talent like Meryl Streep for layered character depictions but I can also do skilled action and glamour like Gal Gadot” It is always a good idea to let others sing one's praises but of late, Kangana Ranaut has decided to let that golden rule slide. But then Ranaut’s other full-time occupation these days seems to be picking fights, diss people and make problematic statements.
“When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman.” He made this tone-deaf comment trivialising rape to describe the training he underwent for a movie. But then Salman Khan has made a lot of stupid and insensitive comments before and since.
“While the Kareenas, Mallikas, Bipashas and Laras are on one side, Aishwarya, Rani, Preity and myself are on other” What side would that be? It’s difficult to say in the face of such breathtaking lack of self-awareness.
“Karzzzz was as big as a Khan release” Did anyone notice the release of this Himesh Reshammiya movie – or literally any other movie of his? Me neither.
“I think Adolf Hitler started it” This was her reply when she was asked about who started the Olympic Games. But then Bipasha Basu’s wedding had a ‘monkey theme’ – why should anything else surprise us.
“I am a Capricorn but I don’t like being a Capricorn. I’d prefer to be a Scorpio so I decided to change my birthday from 5th January to 5th November”. I have no idea whether this was said in jest or ironically – for Uday Chopra’s sake I hope it was.
“It’s a loss for the Oscars that they didn’t choose Barfi!” Self-belief max! OK, then!
She wasn’t able to say who the President of the country was on a Rapid Fire round in an interview. This created a slew of Alia-Bhat-is-so-dumb jokes. But she managed to turn things around and took the wind of out people’s sails by doing this very smart, self-effacing video. Which leads me to wonder, when Bollywood personalities say dumb things; is this part of a clever PR plot? Because you know, in showbiz, all publicity is good publicity.
