Remember how Twitter is all about being a tempest in a teacup? Well here is the latest example of this: involving an actor, the richest man in the world, a girlfriend and some good old-fashioned macho posturing. So apparently Jeff Bezos joke-threatened Leonardo DiCaprio when Bezos’s girlfriend Lauren Sánchez was found greeting DiCaprio rather affectionately. Sounds silly and superficial? It most certainly is!
“Leonardo DiCaprio meets Jeff Bezos & his new girlfriend at the Art Gala in LA” Lauren Sánchez can be seen looking up at DiCaprio almost adoringly.
This is what the tweeple saw this as – they thought that the woman “risked it all” – her relationship with the world’s richest man presumably.
There is a red sign and it literally says ‘Danger’. Clearly he is staking his claim and marking his ‘territory’ there.
Whenever there is mention of Bezos, some speak about how he avoids paying taxes, treats employees unfairly and is guilty of other assorted offences.
Bezos may be better at business than with affairs of the heart.
They thought this was a case of ‘public flirtation’ that was ‘over the top’. This Twitter user obviously thinks that it is up to a man to ‘keep his woman in line’ or something.
The macho posturing in Bezos’s joke is a bit silly they thought – as silly as if DiCaprio’s account Amazon account was suspended.
About women DiCaprio had dated and their respective ages.
So some people on social media really do have all the time in the world.
A lot of people didn’t think Bezos’s ‘joke’ very funny.
Some thought that this was a thinly veiled threat that betrays insecurity.
…Had a whole movie worked out in their heads.
Some quibbled that the net worth of the two men are vastly different but basically it’s this: a show of toxic masculinity. Telling another man to back off is about marking territory and claiming ownership of a person in a sense. Sure, Jeff Bezos may just be making a joke tweeting the ‘danger’ image to a Leo DiCaprio is just a joke, but is it funny?
