Did You Know 6 Indian Shows/Movie Were Nominated For Emmy Awards?

The Emmy Awards are like the Oscar Awards for television and by TV we of course mean OTT platform content as well. Ever since Indian content-creators have started creating content not just for Indian but international audiences as well, the quality of shows has gone up. This has reflected in the popularity of Indian content abroad and recognition in the form of awards and nominations. These Indian shows with artistes such as Vir Das, Sushmita Sen and Nawazuddin Siddiqui received nominations:

Aarya

The series starring Sushmita Sen in the title role, Chandrachur Singh, Sikandar Kher, Ankur Bhatia, Vikas Kumar and others is a Disney Hotstar original. The series follows the story of a woman whose husband is killed for unknowing murky dealings with the drug mafia. To deal with the dangerous situation Aarya herself dons the mantle of the mafia queen. The series was nominated in the category for best drama series this year.

Delhi Crime

Based on real case files from the Delhi Police, this Netflix series features Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Adil Hussain and Rajesh Tailang in the main roles. The film is set in the aftermath of the 2012 gang rape in Munirka and is based on the documents and facts of the case. The series was nominated for the Most Outstanding Drama Series Emmy and became the first Indian series to win the award.

Serious Men

The film based on a book by the same name, follows the story of Ayyan Mani and examines some of the complexities and inequities of caste divisions in India. Nawazuddin Siddiqui received a nomination in the best actor category for Serious Men. The movie had premiered on Netflix in 2020 and received a nomination this year.

Indian Matchmaking

This reality TV series was released last year on Netflix and no matter how cringe/uncomfortable making the show was, it received an Emmy nomination. It was nominated in the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program category and showed us some of the less flattering and regressive aspects of the Indian matchmaking market. Through this, Sima Taparia became a household name and the series is set to return for a second season as well.

Vir Das: For India

Right now he has been in the news for not the best reasons. Vir Das has, however, been very popular abroad for several years and has had four Netflix specials on the streaming platform. After Vir Das: Abroad Understanding and Vir Das: Losing It, it was his third special, Vir Das: For India that was nominated for an Emmy this year.

Four More Shots Please

Sayani Gupta, Baani J, Maanvi Gagroo, and Kirti Kulhari star in this unapologetically self-indulgent story about Indian women with some very, very first world problems. It is shallow and has little to do with the reality of nearly a 100% Indians, but for some escapist fun, this one is a good choice – both seasons. The first season was nominated for an Emmy in 2020.
