Diwali may be an Indian festival, but that doesn’t mean it is celebrated only in India. Diwali celebrations have now gone global! It is celebrated wherever Indians are to be found so it was only obvious that Diwali in Dubai would be a big celebration. After all, there are more Indians in the UAE than another expat group!
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai tweeted this Hindi message. He wished everyone on behalf of the people of UAE.
HH Sheikh Mohammed asked people to share their pictures of their Diwali celebrations and many did do this.
It has been a ten day Diwali festival in the city with shopping, live events, fire cracker displays and even a world record attempt at Al Seef, the waterfront promenade by Meraas in Dubai. A world record for the most number of LED lights lit up in relay will be attempted on the 10th of November.
There were various fireworks displays to mark Diwali in Dubai. Locations include the Dubai Creek at 8 PM on 8th November and at the Global Village on 8th and 9th November at 9 PM.
The first ever diya lighting ceremony with families was held at the Dubai Creek. There was also a special Diwali bazaar for the occasion.
Also part of the celebrations would be the famous Dubai Police supercars parade from November 1 to 10 at 5pm at the Al Seef Heritage Area. The supercars would be on display at a parade in Al Seef Heritage Area main roundabout.
The Emirates mithai truck joined in the celebrations by offering everyone sweets on the occasion of Diwali at Dubai’s famous Bollywood Parks and City Walks. There are also special discounts on offer across all classes on airfares from 7th to 10th November to celebrate the festival.
Also part of the celebrations was the Dubai Police band rendering the Indian national anthem. India's ambassador to the UAE, Navdeep Suri tweeted this video of the event.
