The human mind is a funny thing, isn’t it? The way different people perceive stimuli can be fascinating. Where some see blue and black, some see a white and gold dress. Where some hear ‘yanny’ some hear ‘laurel’. And then we have a picture what some see as a door and others as the picture of a beach. What really is it? And does it really say anything about us when we see one or the other?
Me, personally I saw a beach… irritatingly vertical instead of horizontal as it should be, but a beach nevertheless. First when I saw this image, I was like door? How is this a door? Then I took a second look at ‘saw’ the door. It could be a blue door with a greenish door jamb and a beige stucco kind of wall.
Some of the tweeple were firm in their assessment: this is a door, they said. Some of the Tweeple were helpful enough to give the image some type of context to prove their point.
Among those that saw a beach, some helpfully made some red squiggly lines to indicate boaters and bathers on a beach.
Some simply could not make up their minds - Beach or door? They couldn’t decide.
Yes they did (I suppose some people have all the time in the world to engage in nonessential pursuits). They found that more people see a door than a beach overall.
Those who saw a beach, thought it was sad that so many saw a door. In fact they seemed to be on the view that those who saw a door were probably socially inept; that maybe they needed to get out more.
There was the strongly held view that this was obviously a beach because there were waves. Another thought that this was not possible because the sky was too uniformly blue. So it went on for a while.
I confess I felt a great deal of relief when I saw this photo. I hate having to crane my neck sideways to look at landscapes oriented as portraits and vice versa. Now it is a beach obviously. It’s the right way up and there are bathers in the water that had been edited out.
Some people thought that the photo was just a stunt by the original poster to try and get their picture to go viral. Others were; like me, simply relieved!
