Ed Sheeran has achieved fame in India like few other western acts before him. There are devoted followers of his music all over the country. His Shape of You has caught the fancy of a whole nation and there are spoofs of his songs in several Indian languages (proof of having well and truly arrived, if you needed any). Here is everything you wanted to know about Ed Sheeran’s India tour 2017 – whom he partied with, what he ate and wore – and of course, what Twitter said.
After appearing in Game of Thrones, Ed Sheeran initiated his world tour and his huge popularity in India meant that Mumbai was one of the places, where he performed.
Tickets started at Rs 4,750/-. And no, no lip-synching said reports. ''You know I have made no secret of my love for India, ever,'' Sheeran was reported saying. ''It's such a pleasure to be back in India,'' he added.
Ed Sheeran appeared in a blue kurta with the name of his new album Divide on the sleeve. He then disappeared and returned wearing the blue Team India jersey, to the delight of the audience.
After the concert at Jio Gardens, the singer returned to his hotel and tucked into some Indian favourites – garlic naan, chicken tikka, chhole bhature, paneer bhurji and biryani were some of the things he tried. A personalised hamper created especially for the signer contained some gingerbread cookies, a flute, mug and Kolhapuri chappals.
Ram Kapoor and family, Aftab Shivdasani and others were seen at the concert. Clearly Sheeran is a favourite of the stars as well.
He may have collaborated with the biggest music stars in the world, but Ed Sheeran wants to expand his horizons beyond Taylor Swift and James Blunt. Apparently, he would like to collaborate with Shah Rukh Khan on a song – Bollywood style!
The Shape of you singer was seen partying with Bollywood biggies on the eve of his concert. The bash hosted by choreographer and director Farah Khan saw him partying with Shah Rukh Khan, Malaika Arora Khan and many others. He was seen shaking a leg to Badri ki Dulhaniya at the party.
Many on Twitter were clearly embarrassed at how Bollywood stars seemed to be draping themselves all over Ed Sheeran, who perhaps was embarrassed or did not know quite how to respond to all the effusiveness.
…Who all had a bit of fun – even though they could not be at the concert themselves! We Indians are so starved of international live acts in India that we have to make the most of any acts that do decide to come into India.
