Eight Underrated Romcoms to Watch

The romantic comedy or romcoms is one of my favourite genres of movie – there is very little anxiety, a few laughs along the way and usually a happy ending. Nice, frothy, light. I was looking for recommendations for romcoms to watch, and these are some of the underrated romcoms that were suggested to me; some of which I have already watched and recommend.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

If you don’t like Shakespeare, you may want to skip this one; one of the bard's best and most beloved comedies. However, you may want to watch it for the very fetching Emma Thompson, dashing-looking Kenneth Branagh, Robert Sean Leonard, Denzel Washington, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Kate Beckinsale in her film debut.

Only You (1994)

This movie starring Marisa Tomei and a very young Robert Downey Jr. is about the mysterious call that comes just as she is about to get married. It’s written in the stars he says – but she doesn’t want him because of a small-big lie. I've watched this one, but I think it is worth the re-watch. This is available on YouTube right now – not a great print though.

French Kiss (1995)

Remember Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha? This film starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline was its inspiration. She files to France to confront an erring fiancé but gets into trouble when a charming crook next to her on the flight cons her into smuggling a stolen necklace.

Down With Love (2003)

He can have any woman he wants and she doesn’t need any man – she has it all down in her book Down with Love. It isn't very original, it's something that will probably really annoy a feminist like me, but it sounds funny enough to watch. Besides it stars Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor,…

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

This one stars Ryan Reynolds as the father explaining to his ten-year-old daughter the reasons for his impending divorce – and narrates all of the stories of his past relationships. This is a story about a little girl helping her dad have a happy ending. Cute!

Just Wright (2010)

Queen Latifah and Common star in a film about a pro basketball player and his physical therapist. This one seems a wee bit predictable from the trailer – the guy who goes for a good looking girl overlooking the love of his life who pines for him maybe?

About Time (2013)

This is a delightful film (I've watched it) about a guy who has the unique ability to go back in time. Sometimes this can really make things go wrong – but then they can be made better. This is a sweet story about love and family and apart from a few laughs, this one will coax a few tears as well. Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams are quite adorable and it’s on Netflix.

Home Again (2017)

Reese Witherspoon stars in this film as a 40 something just-separated woman who, shares her home with three aspiring young filmmakers in their 20s, thanks to her mother. This one is also on Netflix and seems well worth the watch.
