If you haven’t yet watched any of the episodes of the eighth and last season of Game of Thrones (3 of the 6 episodes aired so far), proceed with caution. There may be some spoilers. So, episode 1 clarified all the allegiances and episode 2 was about some internal distrust/tensions: Sansa and Daenerys, Daenerys and Jon Snow, Jamie Lannister and Bran Stark and so on. Episode 3 of the final season is all about the big battle, one huge triumph and some sad losses.
The whole episode consists entirely of the big battle. At the end of episode 2 we know that the army of the Undead is about to attack Winterfell and all of episode 3 consists of the epic battle between the living and the dead.
At one point Bran, aka The Three Eyed Raven announces ‘I'm going to go now’. Perhaps he meant to the Weirwood Tree of Godswood, perhaps he meant this.
For a long time, it seemed like the Army of the Living would lose; having used up every arrow in their quiver – literally and figuratively. Everyone's going to die, we’re made to think.
They hid the children and non-combatants in the crypt – which is where they entomb dead people… where they would be safe. Great idea! Except that the Night King literally raises the dead.
Lyanna Mormont manages to neutralise a major threat in the battle. She is always shown as really tough – this time she proves it beyond doubt.
He started out being really dislikeable, but Theon Greyjoy was perhaps transformed by torture. He comes good in the end – another hero.
Jorah Mormont was always the strong, loyal, upright sort. Always.
Arya Stark kills the Night King, yes she does, yes she does!
Probably the fiercest character of the show, it is fitting that Arya turns out to be the hero she is. To quote a quote – Question; What do we say to the god of death? Arya: Not Today
Episode three was really, really dark… annoyingly dark! It was hugely tedious trying to make out what the eff was going on.
We all know that the makers of the show are really committed to realism and so on. But did that have to be so real that viewers had to guess at what was going on most of the time? As one viewer put it, there is no grittier realism than a poorly lit death.
There were Dhothraki. Well presumably were there, because they arrived to fight. Most of us couldn’t make out, however.
We have no idea what is going on with Cerci, Euron Greyjoy and some of the others. We soon shall, however.
Weeks of night shooting, -14 temperatures, too cold to snow, working all night from evening to early morning. Apparently, it was all really, really tough… as it was for viewers, who were really, really trying to make out what the eff was going on.
The battle of the living and the undead is done. It sets the stage for the final battle of the living and the second half of the last season, as the Game of Thrones Season 8 episode 4 preview indicates.
