Season 7 of Game of Thrones may have ended about a year back but that doesn’t stop people from looking forward to the next and final season and speculating endlessly about it. The series is such a unique phenomenon that the devotion and passion of its fan base is quite unprecedented. There are YouTube videos that analyse all the episodes threadbare to try to predict what will happen. Some of the theories are pretty far out! There are also those that claim to have spoiler alerts for GOT season 8.
The 8th and final season of GOT will air sometime in 2019 and will be based on original content that does not form a part of A Song of ice and Fire series of books by George R R Martin (GRRM to fans). The author’s yet to be released novels The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring will likely form the basis for the final season.
GOT has so far has shown a peculiar indifference to audience expectations by frequently killing off good people, showing the victory of evil characters. They don't bother much with happy endings. There is no reason to expect any different from the final season.
Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion Lannister was quoted as saying that the show would have a bitter-sweet ending. The writer GRRM says it will be as much bittersweet as happy. So bittersweet then – which could mean pretty much anything – GOT doesn’t really care.
This is not so much a spoiler as a ‘duh!’ moment. He is one of the few people who can be characterised genuinely good in this series – decent, upright and with personal integrity. Also he’s brave and heroic - with royal blood we now know - so of course he will lead the charge!
Viewers are partly riveted partly repelled by the Daenerys-Jon romance. Everyone wants to find out what will happen when he discovers his true identity – and when he finds out he’d been making nice with someone who is most likely his aunt!
People also seem mostly convinced of the fact that the ruthless Cersie will be toppled from the Iron Throne. Some say Sansa Stark, most certainly will be Queen of the North. Others are convinced that it can only be Daenerys, who is the true heir to the throne and the mother of dragons and so on. She has the job experience for it after all.
One of the many truly evil characters of the show; without any discernible redeeming qualities is Lord Petyr Baelish, who died in what can only be described as a most satisfactory manner. However, there is the expectation that he faked his own death; that he will be back.
Things do come back in GOT – dragons are back after being gone a long time, Jon Snow came back from the dead. Aarya Stark got her eyes back. So clearly, there’s precedent! Who knows what or who may return!
There is no character you love unreservedly. Many characters of unmitigated evil have, over time inspired sympathy. Who knows what surprises Season 8 holds!
Again the analysts have devoted acres of speculation and hours of YouTube footage to the possibility that Bran Stark is actually the Night King. Various 'clues' are supposed to allude to this highly improbable plot twist.
They spent the first few seasons intoning in sepulchral tones – winter is coming. Clearly it is now here. So we shall now see what winter will do, what the White Walkers will do, what the fire breathing dragons and the other transformed dead dragon will do…it will be interesting. But since the GOT guys don’t really care about giving people what they want, we’ll just have to wait.... till next year or whenever they deign to show us GOT Season 8.
