The Golden Globes are among the most coveted of awards on the planet; next only to awards such as the Oscars. In fact, these awards are thought to be not only a precursor to but also a predictor of the Academy Awards. The Golden Globe event broadcast has high viewership but if you missed it here are some highlights:
Ricky Gervais’s initial monologue was bold, to say the least. He made savagely satirical but still hugely funny observations about the people in the room (and some others).
The actors, the filmmakers, the Hollywood Foreign Press, industrialists present all found mentions – not kind.
The dig he took at Apple, with CEO Tim Cook in audience was savage in the extreme.
He spared no one and people had admiration for his breathtaking audacity. He was appropriately disrespectful as someone said on Twitter.
Tom Hanks was one of the people whose reactions the cameras were catching while Gervais laid into everyone --- this is a face made for memes, said the tweeple in delight.
Joaquin Phoenix won the award for the best actor. He started out making a statement about climate change and then went on to appreciate his colleagues, and said his thank-yous -- everything liberally peppered with bleeped-out profanities.
The movie for which he won his award Joker is about a villain’s back story; about why a lack of empathy can be such a problem.
Phoenix is known to be environmentally and politically conscious and active.
People were more interested in watching ex-wife Jennifer Anniston as he watched him deliver his speech.
People love the idea of the possibility of a rekindled romance.
She is one of the most inspiring and entertaining people in the world --- Ellen DeGeneres. She received the Carol Burnett award for “outstanding contributions to the television medium on or off the screen.”
It is rare to come across someone famous on Twitter who doesn’t receive hate. Ellen is one of those people – almost universally beloved.
A great many winners used their platforms to speak out on political matters. These ranged from how climate change was responsible for the ongoing Australian bushfires to ethical business to sending out antiwar messages. Clearly audiences expect film stars to take a stand and to use their celebrity to drive change. Some oblige. Some do not.
