The concept of Diwali and the way that we celebrate the festival has undergone some significant change in recent times. But you know what they say the more things change, the more they remain the same. So while some things were different, much else was the same, as the tweeple told us:
And different strokes for different folks! People were all celebrating, in their own unique ways as this video tweeted by Mindy Kaling tells us.
The SC may have said NO to crackers but we all saw and heard them. But then there were other plus points: “Incredible! Mumbai feels like one big happy family this night. Strangers smiling at each other, Firecracker bursters hugging. Hope it lasts :)” said another tweet.
Diwali is always noisy, but this one was much less so than usual. The preceding days have been blessedly quiet as has the day after and I can actually see the sun quite clearly this morning – oh joy!
No one could have missed them! They were everywhere! When asked to define ‘old’ this netizen replied “People who send WhatsApp Stickers non-ironically”
I received this Diwali greeting: “Wish you all breathable air, Diwali treats that don't make you fat, relatives and friends who don't gift you soan papdi.” That’s when I realised that I am not the only one who thinks of soan papdi as the poor cousin in the mithai family… there are many out there who know this to be true!
I am not happy receiving soan papdi, but in a pinch I will eat it if no more exciting option presents itself. Others seem to genuinely loathe the stuff though!
Apparently there are two camps in the mithai world – soan papdi lovers bond together against kaju katli lovers! While some believe SP to be the most recycled sweets during festive times, others liken the sweet to ‘clouds from heaven’.
Diwali is a time for indulgence. People will take it amiss if you refuse that 8th gulab jamun or the 9th glass of sherbet so you just have to down what is offered and then hope for the best later.
Soon after Diwali each year, we find one image circulating; claiming to be the picture of India taken from space on Diwali day – to indicate how much brighter the country is on said day. Later comes the other viral post that explains the first one to be fake.
Remember the 8th of November two years ago? Many of us have that day indelibly seared in our memories!
