Biopics and films based on historical events are few and far between in India, so when there is one in the offing, it always tends to attract attention, to say nothing of controversy. The soon to be released Indu Sarkar looks at the period of The Emergency in the 1970s and also at the excesses that then leaders such as Sanjay Gandhi unleashed on the public at large. Predictably, the film attracted controversy. Here is all that you wanted to know. Scroll down for the trailer of Indu Sarkar.
The Emergency was a blot on the proud tradition of Indian democracy. However, many are not aware of what went on during that dark period; the 21 month long interlude from 1975 to 1977. This film claims to be based on true events set in that time.
The film is directed, co-written and co-produced by Madhur Bhandarkar of Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion and Traffic Signal fame.
Neil Nitin Mukesh plays Sanjay Gandhi and Supriya Vinod plays Indira Gandhi in the film. The film highlights the excesses of Sanjay Gandhi during that time; including the forced sterilisations and other oppressive policies.
The movie also stars Kriti Kulhari who fights against the system and challenges the imposition of the emergency. Reportedly, the film also has Anupam Kher in a pivotal role.
A woman who claims to be the daughter of Sanjay Gandhi sent a notice to Bhandarkar. It is her apprehension that her ‘relatives’ may be shown in a poor light without “accurate and sufficient historical” information. A woman called Priya Singh Paul, claiming to be the biological daughter of Sanjay Gandhi sent the notice. According to CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, he had no information that Sanjay Gandhi had any offspring other than Varun Gandhi; as such he would have to await acknowledgement from the Gandhi family to act in the matter.
