Instagram versus Reality – Fantasy versus Fact

Social media helps us present a perfect, idealised version of ourselves to the world. We are great looking in our display pictures, have perfect relationships if our statuses are anything to go by and take marvellous holidays as the carefully chosen photos demonstrate. Reality could be a little different, but our vanity demands that we present an ideal version of ourselves to others.

Flattering, even misleading

Only the most flattering pictures are to be used as DPs; even if those pictures belie reality.

Very misleading

We are encouraged to see things from an altogether different perspective.

Reality – five seconds apart

Breathing in versus breathing out; an expression of calm repose versus an angry grimace can make a dramatic difference if Instagram is to be believed.

Blemishes? What are those?

The spots, acne, stretch marks, cellulite --- all smoothed away --- with a little bit of help from the friendly photoshop app.

Why sweat it out in a gym?

…When you can just ‘borrow’ someone else’s body? Thanks to numerous easy to use editing apps, morphing a face on to someone else's body is as easy as A B C now.

A matter of angles

Sometimes it’s just the angle from which a picture is taken that decides the difference between just ‘ho hum’ and ‘wow’! It would seem that Instagram teaches us more about angles than geometry class ever did.

Natural versus carefully constructed

Thats supposedly spontaneous picture? There is a lot more to it than meets the eye: careful makeup, flattering angle and much else.

When rain is both necessary and unnecessary

If there was no rain, how would we get a load of those chiseled abs through that clingy wet white tee. On the other hand actual rain would spoil that carefully coiffed do! So wet the tee, take a pic and add the rain later – solv-ed!

Wishful thinking

Only one of the two people in that picture seems happy – she also claims to be in love. Alas neither emotion seems to be shared by the other person in the picture.

Sometimes it is comforting

Even stars don’t look as good as their photos in real life – they have the luck of their genes, the advantage of trainers and stylists and photo-shop expert – and they still manage to look like this. So Instagram versus reality is not always disappointing. Sometimes the reality cheers us up!
