Kalank – meaning blemish or stain – is a movie starring Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Kunal Khemu and others. The movie was conceptualised 15 years ago and Dixit’s character was originally supposed to have been played by the late Sridevi. Here is the teaser of Kalank and the reactions that it spawned:
The movie is a period drama set in pre-independence India in 1945 and is described by the filmmakers as a tale of eternal love. Alia Bhatt plays Roop, Madhuri Dixit is to be Bahaar Begum, Sanjay Dutt plays Balraj Chaudhry, Varun Dhawan plays the character Zafar, Aditya Roy Kapoor is Dev Chaudhry and Sonakshi Sinha is Satya Chaudhry.
The teaser reveals little of the story but it seems obvious that this is a story of ill-fated lovers whose circumstances force them in different directions not of their choosing.
The film promises to be grand and lushly mounted, with beautiful costumes and opulent sets. The way that aesthetics seem to trump historical accuracy remind one of the films of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The cast, the hinted-at story line and the visual appeal of the film has a lot of people excited. They anticipate an engrossing, gorgeous film.
The two lead actors of the film have clearly come a lot way since their glamorous but largely shallow debut in Student of the Year.
Though we know little about the story of the film, it does appear to be something to do with unfulfilled love and lovers torn asunder.
Apparently there is such a phenomenon – where people make short, silly videos using the tik tok app which others like and share (there is a universe of mediocrity and banality out there). From this making and sharing, emerge tik tok celebrities, it would seem.
This line spoken by Alia Bhatt's character lends itself to a lot of memes and the tweeple were more than equal to the task.
The teaser has few spoken lines. Each has triggered memes.
As I have said before, Karan Johar seems to have something to do with practically all major productions in Bollywood these days. Dharma Productions is producing Kalank as well.
The movie is slated to release on 17 April 2019. We will undoubtedly have a Kalank trailer or two launching soon with the release date being just weeks away.
