Filmmakers are currently exploring new, women-centric themes for TV series and movies. New trailers launched during the recent past offer up an interesting smorgasbord of entertainment options to look forward to. Check out the trailers of movies such as The Hustle, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and of upcoming seasons of series such as Batwoman, Little Big Lies and Nancy Drew:
Starring the stunning Angelina Jolie, this is the story that carries on several years after the 2014 film Maleficent (based loosely on the Sleeping Beauty fairytale). This story will follow the story of the unlikely alliance formed between the horned fairy (Angelina Jolie) and Elle Fanning’s character as well as the queen played by Michelle Pfeiffer. It is about fighting new enemies, about the magical creatures that populate that fantasy universe and the complex relationship between the female protagonists – fairy, queen and princess.
“The Bat's not coming back”, we hear. We have a new female Joker-looking villain and… wait for it… the first openly gay superhero! Batwoman, the series is based on the DC character Kate Kane, the costumed crime fighter who is the cousin of Batman aka Bruce Wayne. Ruby Rose plays the title role of the caped crusader with the passion for social justice.
Season 1 aired in 2017 and the second season is set to air in June 2019. Featuring a formidable star cast of Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and now Meryl Streep, the critically acclaimed series tells the story of emotionally troubled women embroiled in a murder investigation. The complex, layered narrative earned as many as 16 Emmy nominations and won eight.
Those of us who grew up reading the novels of Nancy Drew teen detective would find this very different from the world of the ‘titian-haired sleuth’ that we imagined. A significantly more mature sleuth goes ahead and investigates crimes with a very eerie, supernatural theme. The series follows the story of Nancy who takes a break from college and seems to be waitressing when her friends become the suspects and witnesses to a fellow school kid’s murder. Since she is who she is, it falls to her to uncover the real murderer; likely succeeding where the authorities fail.
Remember, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Michael Caine and Steve Martin? Well The Hustle seems to be the female version of the film about clever con-artists. Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson are the hustlers who go to the French Riviera to find rich men and relieve them of their riches. If the trailer of The Hustle sounds interesting, the movie is out in theatres right now.
