The first thing that caught my attention is that the series stars Manoj Bajpayee. Not only is he a brilliant actor, but he is also someone who can reliably be expected to be a part of interesting projects that are not the usual, run of the mill fare. So when the trailer of The Family Man was released, many including me were interested.
It starts out pretty humdrum – a middle-class dad driving his son somewhere, having a driving altercation and speedily hightailing it out of there. We are told about the regular guy in a boring, uneventful ‘sarkari’ job before we are told about an agent who is a part of NIA’s special cell.
The series will stream all episodes on Amazon Prime Video from 20th September. It stars Manoj Bajpayee as Srikant, Priyamani, Sharib Hashmi, Dalip Tahil, Pawan Chopra, Neeraj Madhav and others.
Bajpayee juggles his two disparate personas – one as a family man in an inconsequential government job and the other as a highly trained anti-terror functionary who faces danger every day – with effortless ease. The series promises to be funny and realistic and exciting.
People have high expectations of the series, created and written by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. They feel that only an actor of the calibre of Manoj Bajpayee can do justice to a role such as this one.
While he is a secret service agent, he is also very much a middle class Indian and a family man who tries to keep it all together.
The juxtaposition of a mundane life with dangerous undercover missions triggered many memes on the theme of the ordinary Indian ‘family man’.
This scene of the father avoiding trouble but a feisty son deciding to speak out also seemed to tickle everyone's fancy.
Kids then v. kids now.
Bajpayee going about doing his job, prosaically chasing what appears to be a fleeing criminal – also interested people.
The story seems to be about a man in a seemingly ordinary, poorly paid job – but one that is of national importance. After all someone has to do the job.
Those who enjoy quality shows that are not the usual saas-bahu melodrama are looking forward to Family Man. Catch this one on Amazon Prime Video on 20th September.
