Manorama Is the Original Source of Emojis Tweeple Said – Sounds about Right

Remember Kaushalya, the evil stepmother (or aunt or whatever other evil relative she was) in Seeta or Geeta starring Hema Malini in a double role? Some of the tweeple suddenly remembered her – as played by Manorama – and her highly exaggerated facial expressions. And they decided that this was the original emoji queen. Take a look:

Original emojis

Expressing exaggerated delight or fear, with a scheming evil glint in the eye, playing dumb, pretending --- it’s all really OTT.

Superb!

People loved her comical expressions. Some found her familiar but could not place her.

Others immediately remembered

She was the evil aunt who terrorised her tragic niece (Seeta) and niece’s even more tragic grandmother and tried to get her hands on Seeta’s wealth.

Popular actor from back in the day

Manorama was a popular character actress of the 60s and 70s whose original name was Erin Issac Daniels. She began her career as a child artiste in the 1930s  in Lahore as Baby Iris.

Negative roles

While she is best known for her cartoonish OTT expressions and villainous roles, she is also remembered for her last ever role – that of Madhumati in Deepa Mehta’s acclaimed film Water.

Going viral

People found the video really funny and it has since gone viral on social media; becoming a popular WhatsApp forward.

True

The Manorama video with those exaggerated, cartoonish expressions does remind us of something – emojis! Maybe she was the original inspiration, this tweet seems to suggest.
