It amuses us to know about the biggest, most expensive, objects and creations – even if this consists of numbers that have no real relevance to our life. If we didn’t have this fascination for the tallest, shortest, fastest, smartest etc., we wouldn’t have had the Guinness World Records either. It stands to reason that we want to know about the most expensive movies ever made. But what counts as ‘most expensive’ – most expensive for its time or of all time?
The fourth installment of the Johnny Depp starrer is said to be the biggest budget film ever made. Made in 2011, this was made at an estimated cost of $379 million. Wikipedia names it the most expensive film ever made
Most people interested in movie trivia think that this is the most expensive movie ever made and in fact, it does hold the Guinness World Record for this. However, it was the marketing budget that makes it the most expensive. With a production budget of $425 million, $150 million was spent on marketing and promotion of the film.
Avengers: Age of Ultron came out in 2015 and was made at the cost of $365, Avengers: Endgame which came out in 2019 cost $356 and Avengers: Infinity War, the 2018 film was made with a $325 budget. So Marvel’s Avenger films are collectively some of the most expensive films ever made.
This was the most expensive movie made at the time – a silent era film that continued to hold the record for the most costly film even after talkies started to be made. The film starred Ramon Novarro and was notable for the fact that some scenes were shot in two colour technicolour.
The most expensive trilogy or back to back films, happens to be the Hobbit films. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).
When it was made, this Elizabeth Taylor movie was most expensive up to that point. Though it was the biggest grossing movie of the year (1963) it still did not manage to recover its costs – an estimated $31 million. The film very nearly bankrupted the studio and was also famous for Taylor's alleged affair with co-star Richard Burton at the time.
This was the first $100 million movie ever made. The 1994 James Cameron film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jamie Lee Curtis and became one of the most memorable action-comedy films of its time. however, it was only the third highest-grossing film after The Lion King and Forrest Gump that year.
The Tamil film 2.0 starring Rajinikanth is listed as the most expensive Indian film ever. However, the most expensive Indian film released this year has been the hit Telugu film RRR. Starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, the movie grossed ₹1,127 crores (US$150 million) worldwide.
