These women have made the nation proud with their valour and spirit to challenge gender stereotypes. They took a firm stand and flourished with flying colours in different fields. These women have become a source of inspiration for all those females who are still under the shackles of various norms and notions of the society. We salute them for what they have done!

1. MC Mary Kom

Also known by the name ‘Magnificent Mary’, she has become a boxing champion and brought pride to country by winning various prestigious trophies and medals in Olympics, Commonwealth games and many others. Boxing is thought to be a male sport prmarily.

2. Saba Anjum

She has played as the forward in the Indian Women’s Hockey Team and has successfully bagged the gold medal during the Commonwealth Games held in 2010. Hockey is definitely thought to be a boy’s/man’s game. Chak De India changed a lot of perceptions of course, but Saba has brought honour to the country which goes beyond making money from a movie.

 

3. Geeta Phogat

People say that wrestling is not the cup of tea for Indian women. But she proved this incorrect with her outstanding performance. She qualified for the Olympics in 2010 and has been a motivation for all the Indian women. She was trained with male wrestlers as there were no female wrestlers in North India.

Even though India is cricket crazy, they are only crazy about watching the men play. The women’s team which has been performing really well at the international level is mostly ignored and their matches aren’t even telecast. There is no women’s IPL either. Despite this Mithali Raj who captian’s this team goes out and brings honour to the country.

 

5. Saina Nehwal

After winning in international sports events like Australian Open and China Super Tennis Open, Saina has emerged as one of the most successful shutters of our country and still continues to bring pride and honour to the nation. While badminton isn’t particularly a male sport, playing at an international level is usually perceived as a man’s prerogative.

 

6. Sania Mirza

Her name has been engraved in golden letters in the tennis world. She has been the first to win the colossal Grand Slam title and shown exemplary performance since then. This is another game which has many women players but playing at an international level and reporting around it was left to the likes of Leander Paes or Mahesh Bhupati.
