For a while now, there had been breathless anticipation of the simultaneous multi-lingual release of Saaho. Now that even the rest of India is well-acquainted with Telugu superstar Prabhas (of Baahubali fame) there was a pan Indian sense of anticipation for the release of the movie that also stars Bollywood actor Shradha Kapoor. So is Saaho worth the hype? Here is what the audiences and the reviewers say:
…Because Prabhas has the kind of fanatical following that no Bollywood actor (except perhaps Salman Khan) seems to enjoys.
The excitement was apparently at fever pitch among some fans.
Screenwriter/director Maruthi had this to say. Apparently the movie is ‘next level’ and the men have ‘steel balls’ (which sounds altogether uncomfortable, whatever that means).
I cannot pretend to understand the words, but the emojis seem to speak louder than words and seem to translate loosely to 'lit AF'. Plus the image talks about ‘mind-blowing action sequences and ‘eye-opening twists’.
For whatever reason, the views of Taran Adash matter in all things filmi. While he is undeservedly generous with his star ratings for some pretty bad Bollywood movies, he gave just one and a half stars to this one.
According to this review, Prabhas’s charm and effortless screen presence are the few positives in a movie with too many characters, a confusing story, and poor almost everything else.
It is a stylish but dull film, says this reviewer. It tries to be all things to all people and ends up being something of a mess.
Many viewers regretted their decision to go watch the movie. For them it was difficult to sit through the whole thing in the theatre.
After all that hype, the movie didn’t come up to the expectations of many.
Perhaps this is meant to indicate that the film is silly and shallow while being good looking?
Clearly there are those who feel that Prabhas shouldn’t have done Saaho and that it probably detracts from his popularity.
The movie may not have garnered good reviews from the critics, but it still got a huge opening and is well on its way to becoming a hit. Previous reports suggested that the film had managed to recover its costs even before its release.
These are the diehard fans who care nothing for reviews. They have enjoyed watching Prabhas in Saaho and they plan to do it again. No one-star or one-and-a-half-star reviews are going to deter them from enjoying something that they are determined to enjoy.
