It may be a more subdued Diwali than usual this year. With someone or the other in the family or friend circle sick with COVID social distancing becomes important. The terrible pall of pollution that hangs over much of the Northern plains means that even more of us will choose to stay indoors. So then, some of these Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney Hotstar content will help make the celebrations somewhat less dismal this Diwali.
The highly promising trailer makes this a movie to look forward to. An ensemble cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Saniya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Sheikh tells four parallel stories. There is a sex tape, a mislaid suitcase full of money, a kidnapping, lots of would-be criminals and several laugh out loud scenes in the trailer; promising a fun ride. The film releases on 12th November on Netflix.
Starring Rajkummar Rao, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and others, this one promises to be another fun ride. This seems to be about two men vying for the affections of one woman; not only that but also vying for the same PT teacher position in a school. Also featuring the hugely talented Saurabh Shukla and Ila Arun, this releases on Amazon Prime Video on 13 November 2020.
This is a miniseries based on a movie of the same name. The ten-part series stars Kate Mara and Nick Robison. If stories about forbidden love are your thing, then this is your thing. The story is about a married woman; a high school teacher's illegal affair with a high school senior. So far three episodes are available on Disney Hotstar as on 10 November. The next episode will be available from on 17th Nov and then a new episode will be made available each subsequent week.
This is an Italian language film that wouldn’t have caught my eye usually, except for two reasons: the fact that it stars the amazing Sophia Loren, and the fact that is a story of redemption. I am a sucker for stories about the triumph of the human spirit. A holocaust survivor runs a daycare service. After she is robbed by an urchin she takes him in and cares for him. This is the story of their struggles and the bond that flowers between two unlikely individuals. The movie is based on the novel called The Life Before Us by Romain Gary and will release on Netflix on 13 November 2020.
This is an animation Superman film but one set in Cold War times and which answers the question, what if Superman was raised in the Soviet Union? The movie also features Wonder Woman, and a terrorist Batman who blames Superman for the death of his parents and an alien cyborg, Brainiac. This movie releases on Amazon Prime on 13 November, though it had seen a general release earlier this year in February.
With so much multilingual content at our fingertips and the ability to read quickly; it would be a shame if one didn’t widen one's viewing horizons. So I included this film in this list. The festive release is inspired by the book Simply Fly; the story of Nedumaaran Rajangam who dreams of making the common man fly. Starring Suriya, Paresh Rawal and Aparna Balamurali this one released on 11 November 2020 on Amazon Prime Video.
