The recently announced Oscar awards had some surprises for the movie-loving public. A foreign language film won the best picture award this time and the world saw an unusual sight of an interpreter explaining an acceptance speech. Eminem made an appearance and Natalie Portman turned up in a unique protest cape.
South Korean film Parasite was the big winner on Oscar night. It was the first foreign-language movie to win the best picture award. It also won the best director award for Bong Joon-ho and the best original screenplay award.
His hat tip to Martin Scorsese had everyone on their feet. He then said that he would like to get a chainsaw to divide his award into five to split it with the others nominated for the best director category. Plus he kept smiling at his statuettes and the world collectively went aww!
Eminem’s performance of Lose Yourself was a surprise. In 2003 when he had won an award he hadn’t even bothered to turn up. This time he did and got a standing ovation and downloads of the song increased 1,894% as well.
Two years ago Natalie Portman had pointed out Hollywood’s bias towards male directors. This time her statement was more concrete: her cape featured the names of all the women who didn’t receive nominations.
The non-hosts Steve Martin and Chris Rock (there was no traditional Oscar host this year) got in some choice Bezos jokes with him sitting right there.
These women had a lot of fun – so much so that poor Billie Eilish grimaced at the amount of noise they were making. A lot of people thought they should be hosting the whole damn thing!
Brad Pitt used his time on stage when accepting the best supporting actor award to make a political statement. He referenced the presidential impeachment proceedings; particularly the controversial fact that John Bolton had not been allowed to testify.
He won the best actor award and used his time on stage to speak about his pet projects and also took time out for some self-flagellation.
Keanu Reeves is the guy everyone likes. He won more hearts when he took his mother to the Oscars.
They came dressed as their characters from the much-reviled Cats and had a lot of fun doing it at #Oscars2020.
