Sanjay Leela Bhansali creations always attract eyeballs. And attention! And reactions! When the trailer of his latest project Padmavati finally released – after tantalizing glimpses of each of the three main characters – everyone on social media collectively went into meltdown mode! Here is the trailer of Padmavati and some of the choicest reactions to it:
The trailer starts with sweeping shots of fortified forts, rugged terrain; easing into an introduction to each of the three protagonists – the beautiful royal couple played by Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor and what appears to be a manic, self obsessed third corner to the triangle; the battle scarred Allauddin Khilji played by Ranveer Singh. There are the lavish battle scenes, gorgeous palace scenes and the trailer ends with the celebrated Jauhar scene.
Since most of us know the legend of Rani Padmini, the trailer doesn’t attempt to tell it to us. There are two short voiceovers in the trailer; but most of its duration is overlaid with sumptuous, soaring music that is apposite to the visuals. The trailer released yesterday and today it’s already garnered well over 15 million views.
The lush grandeur, the scale and sweep of the visuals as well as the looks of the actors impressed fans obviously. There was a lot of gushing praise from Twitterati who could not contain their delight, admiration and wonder to say nothing of the anticipation of the release of the film on 1 December 2017.
Some villains gain more fame than the hero. Many on Twitter felt that this would be the case here as well; with Ranveer Singh’s Khilji joining the ranks of other epic villains such as Mogambo, Gabbar, Shakaal and others.
Many thought that movies such as these, with their high octane performances, the content and the lavish mounting, deserved to be sent to the Oscars. Others thought that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was just the person to create an Indian version of the Game of Thrones.
Varun Dhawan had this to tweet, Anushka Sharma thought that the trailer was magnificent, Karan Johar thought that the actors had given their career best performances, Sidharth Malhotra thought that it was a mind blowing piece of art while Rakesh Roshan thought that the spectacular trailer showed the director's passion in every frame.
Someone even painstakingly captured stills of the trailer where the different emotions of the Nine Rasas were supposedly depicted. Agree or not; the dedication of this fan cannot be faulted.
One wit decided to make a pun on the word Padmavati using these pictures of a pouting Deepika.
Someone also decided to direct a barb at the image of Ranveer Singh as Khilji – the villain who is also something of a savage boor. Another used the same image to illustrate how some break their Navratri fast!
One wit also harked back to some films of Shahid Kapoor which had done rather poor business. Another wit had this to say: am I the only one waiting for a slip-up where he forgets his heels and we see that she's taller than him ??
