She is an entertainer known as much for her unique fashion sense as she is for her music. Sometimes Lady Gaga uses her over the top outfits to support a cause – such as when she wore a meat dress (yes a dress made from meat) to make a point about fighting for one's rights. At times it is to make an entrance – such as when she burst out of a giant egg on stage at the Grammys. At times she dresses to make a statement; the way she did recently with her much written about oversized pantsuit.
Lady Gaga was honored as one of Elle’s Women in Hollywood recently and made an acceptance speech that was both vulnerable and powerful at the same time. She opened up about surviving sexual assault at age 19, which however left her with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and fibromyalgia (a condition that causes severe musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep, memory and mood problems).
Columnists and other celebrities were highly appreciative of the speech and the way that Lady Gaga used her clothing choice to talk on important subjects.
She spoke about “wearing the pants” literally and figuratively by fighting back against the standards and expectations of Hollywood. In her speech she revealed how trying on luxurious and expensive dresses one after another and felt sick about the tight corsets, the beads, feathers, high heels.
Red carpets mean putting on the most eye catching, flattering, and well-fitting of dresses. She was clearly seen to buck this trend by wearing the oversized Marc Jacob suit.
Actress and liberal activist, Alyssa Milano also tweeted her admiration for Lady Gaga and support for the content of her speech in which she spoke about resisting the conditioning that women are subjected to from an early age. Women are conditioned to listen to men, but in her speech Lady Gaga decided that she wanted to take her power back by choosing not to dress to impress and not pander to expectations that others had.
Sometimes she shocks us and makes us think. Sometimes she amazes us and even delights us. Then there are those times when Lady Gaga draws us in with her vulnerability, this apparently was one of those times.
Many were of the view that Lady Gaga's sartorial choice was merely a new trend in fashion; a well thought out, pre-planned move to catch eyeballs.
Many had only respect and gratitude in response to Lady Gaga's speech and her choice of outfit. They felt inspired by her and felt that their own problems were validated by her speaking out about the issues that she has faced.
