Ranveer Singh is one of India’s top paid actors who has proven himself to be an able, versatile and bankable star; a sort of juiced up latter-day Govinda on steroids. After his barbaric Allauddin Khilji in Padmaavat and his wedding, next on the anvil is Simmba. From the stables of Rohit Shetty, this Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan and Sonu Sood starrer releases on 28th December 2018. The recent trailer release showcased Raveer Singh playing a bad, then good cop.
So there we have a little boy who is inspired by Bajirao Singham (the loose cannon of a cop and a law unto himself played by Ajay Devgn who reprises his role in this film as well) to don khaki. But he does so for all the wrong reasons until some incident awakens his conscience and the righteous cop emerges. Sonu Sood is clearly the bad guy and we aren’t too clear what Sara Ali Khan does in the film.
Rohit Shetty gives us the bad-cop-turned-good “Simmba” Bhalerao. The Simmba trailer seems to indicate that here is yet another vigilante cinematic cop who believes that extra-judicial killings are tantamount to justice.
Simmba is the adaptation of a Telugu film called Temper which had N T Rama Rao Jr. in the lead role. Some viewers, particularly Telugu film fans appear to have low expectations of Ranveer’s Simmba
Trade pundits and industry analysts are hopeful that the film will do well at the box office since it has all the right ingredients: high octane drama, lots of bone-crunching violence and presumably satisfactory vengeance in the end.
Ranveer dons khaki and plays a cop for the first time. People are interested to watch him in his avatar. His irrepressible energy fairly pops out at the viewer from the screen, so, many expect this to be a hit.
Without any undue humility, Ranveer Singh's tweet declares this combination of his with Rohit Shetty to be a winning one. This is not an unreasonable expectation, since Indian audiences have a fair tolerance; even appetite for the Rohit Shetty brand of loud, implausible, over the top films with their rough and ready form of justice.
Many have very high expectations of the film; particularly fans of Ranveer Singh. Others however feel that this film is going to be more of what we have seen coming out of Bollywood numerous times and that the film may not do well at the box office. While we are now seeing a lot of variety and originality in Hindi films these days, there is still a lot of formulaic rehash dished up for us the viewing public.
