He was named Abhas Kumar by his parents and later changed it to Kishore Kumar after he joined Bollywood.
Kishore Da was born in Madhya Pradesh to Kunjalal Gangulyand Gouri Devi and had three siblings- Ashok Kumar, Sati Devi and Anoop Kumar.
He started his career as a chorus singer for Bombay Talkies, where his brother Ashok Kumar worked.
Originally, Kishore Da and Mehmood Ali were supposed to play the lead in movie 'Ananda', but that never happened, since director Hrishikesh Mukherjee was driven away by the singer's gatekeepers.
He married four times. Ruma Ghosh was his first wife. After divorcing her, he married Madhubala, who died after a few years. Later, he married Yogita Bali, but even this relationship was short-lived. Finally, he married Leena Chandavarkar and this lasted until his death in 1987.
In the category of the best playback singer, male, Kishore Da has won eight Filmfare awards, the highest number of wins in this category till now.
Known as being notorious and moody, Kishore Da became a loner in the later part of his life.
He believed in many things and spent time thinking about these many things. Once he discovered a priest's graveyard near his Juhu home and noticed the date on the tombstone was 4th August, 1929, his birth date! This left the versatile singer wondering about this co-incidence for a long time.
