India's first Netflix original series, Sacred Games is a grim, gritty, realistic story that has held Indian audiences in thrall since its first season launched last year. There has also been a significant amount of anticipation for the second season which launched on 15 August 2019. So we ask the question again, is Sacred Games 2 worth your while and a Netflix subscription?
The first season was absorbing, shocking, original and highly addictive. People were binge watching the show and longing for more.
Viewers were waiting to watch the new season. To their delight, the streaming service decided to oblige everyone by bringing forward the release by 12 hours to 12 AM rather than the scheduled 12 PM.
Those who actually pay for a Netflix subscription usually end up sponsoring the viewership of friends and family. Such subscribers suddenly became very popular.
…Others, not so much.
Saif Ali Khan as Inspector Sartaj Singh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Ganesh Gaitonde and Pankaj Tripathi as the menacing Khanna Guruji return in season 2.
Amruta Subhash as RAW agent Kusum Devi Yadav, Kalki Koechlin as Batya Abelman, Ranvir Shorey as Shahid Khan, Harshita Gaur and Sobhita Dhulipala are some of the new characters this season.
Predictably, there are those who feel that season 2 is a pale imitation of the first one.
Or maybe there wasn’t enough nudity? Some fans of the show thought so. However a great many fans have said that series two is better written and has better performances.
As expected, season 2 also has the characters mouthing a colourful range of profanity and unmentionable expletives.
So are the other, largely grey characters – which we have come to expect from this series - as are the memorable dialogues of the series.
With the super success of the lines mouthed by the series’ lead played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the second season offers more fodder for the meme-mill.
This line seemed to inspire quite a few tweets.
Bunty’s character is always good for a few good lines – this one seems set to be a regular with meme-makers.
… that inspired the meme-makers. In times to come, we are bound to see good use made of these and other lines from Sacred Games 2 for clever new memes.
