it has been a long standing theory that secret messages were delivered through art. Some secrets have been deciphered and others are still clear only to those who know the code. Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code took us through the whole theory around Da Vinci’s art work. Here are some secrets hidden around famous pieces of art that you may not have heard of before.
Hidden Proverbs
The painting ‘Netherlandish Proverbs’ by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, was created in the year 1559. This seemingly innocuous painting contains the depictions of over 112 identifiable idioms and proverbs. Some of the more visible ones are ‘swimming against the tide,’ ‘banging your head against a brick wall,’ ‘big fish eat little fish’ and so on.
A Hidden Painting
The painting entitled ‘The Blue Room’ by Pablo Picasso was revealed to have another image painted below it of a man wearing a bow tie and a suit. The figure is seated and is resting his face on his hand. This can be explained when you consider that Picasso probably could not afford to buy new canvases every time he got a new idea and that he simply had to paint when he got a new idea.
The Last Supper
Van Gogh is supposed to have interpreted the scene of the Last Supper in his painting ‘Café Terrace at Night’ which was painted in the year 1888. The central figure in the painting, the the waiter is clothed in all white and is surrounded by 12 figures in black.
