We have either given them or have been on the receiving end at least once. The feeling is not nice. At the start of every relationship, you can never imagine the day you would have ‘The Talk’, that is, the break up talk. We all know breaking up is an extremely awkward and sad process, and it is especially more awkward if your partner isn’t at the same place as you.

But, however awkward you feel, you should never ever give these generic, overused and fake excuses for breaking up!

1.” It’s not you, it’s me.”

Seriously? After all the books and movies, the least you should have learnt is to NEVER give this reason while breaking up. You know it, your soon-to-be-ex knows it and so does the eavesdropping lady that when someone uses the old “It’s not you, it’s me” cliché, it definitely means that it is “you”.

Where have I heard this before?

Where have I heard this before?

2. “Maybe we will work better as friends.”

Really? Why didn’t you think of this before getting into a relationship? Never say this to anyone and never ever top it off with a “Can we still be friends?”, you might just get water thrown on you.

Not even if hell freezes over.

Not even if hell freezes over.

3. “I have to concentrate on my work.”

Another no – no. If you really wanted this relationship to work, nothing could stop you from trying to make it happen and certainly not your work, which is just one part of your life just like your relationship is another part of it.

Everybody can see through it!

Nobody buys this excuse!

4. “I’m not ready to be in a serious relationship.”

Well, you certainly didn’t think so last week. Looks like you’ve had your share of fun and want to go back to your old ways.

Killing you in my mind.

Killing you in my mind.

5. need some space.”

It is never a good idea to keep your partner hanging with a reason as vague as this one. What does it mean? Are you going to re – evaluate the relationship later? Never? What?? Definitely not a good idea to say that.

What does that even mean?

What does that even mean?

6. “You’re really nice, But…”

But you are going to go and date someone much worse the very next day because nice just doesn’t cut it anymore. Save it. We all know what that used up line means.

For saying that, yes.

For saying that, yes.
