The highly anticipated movie of the young, rich and beautiful, Student of the Year 2 is out. As expected, the ‘students’ in this film – dance, romance, play sport, fight, engage in drama – do pretty much everything except study in the grand old tradition of Karan Johar’s fantasy schools. There are those who liked SOTY 2, but the film reviews indicate that most are having a better time dissing the film than they had actually watching the film:
The movie is much like its earlier avatar but worse, say the reviews. It’s all about petty jealousies, silly dramas, cheesy lines and predictability. It is also about beautiful people with perfect bodies doing their thing at some mythical, impossibly glitzy ‘college’ in Dehradun.
According to Raja Sen’s caustic review, the stylists work harder than the actors in a film that “exists exclusively to flaunt Tiger Shroff’s physique”.
It isn’t all bad. The less savage reviewers have been kinder to the film. If there is a supply of the escapist froth for which there clearly is a large demand, so be it.
A film’s IMDB rating is thought to be the timeless and definitive rating of a film. It is not good.
There are a lot of people who have enjoyed the superficial, silly movie, but ultimately, you need to beware and know what you're getting into.
I am not sure whether that is an actual picture or a generic one from somewhere on the net, but according to this commentator many couldn’t tolerate watching the whole movie. As one reviewer put it, it was more trauma than drama.
Some reviews were bad; some completely OTT – like this one.
Plenty of people enjoyed the escapist drama, the good looking people, the smart clothes, the action.
Maybe some, but people don’t really trust them. Besides they are having way too much fun rubbishing the film.
It is a waste of money, said some. Others demanded that it should be released on TV soon, so they can watch it without said waste of money.
One part of the country has suffered a devastating calamity. Some commentators suggest that contributing to rescue and relief operations may be a better way to spend money than to watch the film.
The general view seems to be that this film is worse than the Student of the Year which launched Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan.
This commentator advises that if you do go to watch the film, do not advertise the fact. People will judge you – and not kindly.
Some reviewers have been kind to individual performances of actors Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria, Ananya Panday, Aditya Seal, Gul Panag, Sameer Soni. However, they feel that the shoddy writing has let them down.
Will Smith embodies cool in my book. I want to know what the flip he's doing in this film; even if it is only a cameo. So I shall be brave and go and watch Student of the Year 2 in the theatre today. I can feel you judging me.
