Full disclosure – if you’ve not watched the third episode of Season eight Game of Thrones and wish to be surprised, do not read further. Now if you did see the episode (or read my post about it), you know all about that fist pump moment when Arya Star arrives in the nick of time and plunges a dagger straight into the Night King. You know that this made all the White Walkers – including the undead dragon shatter instantly into nothingness. Arya’s fierce attack has inspired this on Twitter:
She came at him unexpectedly, he went for her throat. In a misleading move, she drops her dagger – only to catch it with her other hand and plunge into the centre of the Night King’s chest.
In case you didn’t get it when Arya did it, this animated clip is a close approximation.
Arya Stark is arguably one of the fiercest and most ruthless of warriors in the show.
As several tweeple pointed it out, Arya Stark has used this manoeuvre before with Brienne of Tarth.
Some pointed out that we’ve actually seen this before in Star Wars; when Rey the Jakku scavenger did this with a sword (or is this called a light sabre? My Star Wars gen is rather vague).
Soon people were posting their version of #TheArya online. The drop-catch-stab sequence really seemed to catch every one's fancy.
It is quite a cool manoeuvre and everyone seemed to have their own version of it.
With a banana!
Maybe it can work as a dance move, thought this woman.
The tweeple got quite inventive about the many different things they could do via Arya’s now iconic manoeuvre.
Didn’t work from that upper angle. Maybe it works from the lower angle?
Who says you need a real dagger. A comb can work.
#NotToday – this is Arya Stark’s rallying cry, it could as easily apply to a fiercely competitive game.
